Shimla
Old, layered, dust-and-gold. Royal patronage stacked on Sufi shrines stacked on Mughal mortar.
Shimla was the British Raj's summer capital and still walks like one — Mall Road, Christ Church, the Viceregal Lodge, and a pedestrianised Ridge with mountain views on a clear day. The journey in matters: the Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway (UNESCO-listed) climbs 96 km through 102 tunnels. Avoid the peak May-June and December honeymoon waves; September to early November is the underrated window. Day-trip to Kufri (less alpine than its reputation) or Naldehra (golf course at 2,100 m). The town is steep — stay in or near Mall Road if you don't want to climb back uphill at 2am after dinner.
