Curator's note

Shimla Falls 2, perched off the winding Jutogh‑Holta road just beyond the tea‑estate labyrinth, is one of those rare natural set‑pieces that actually rewards the early‑morning grind rather than the postcard‑hour. The cascade drops roughly 80 metres into a clear, chill‑blue plunge pool that, unlike the tourist‑packed Mahasu, is still swimmable until about eleven o’clock – after that the water turns muddy with runoff and the crowds arrive. Park the car at the modest stone lay‑by opposite the old Forestry Department bungalow, then scramble up the short, uneven granite steps to the viewing platform; the best seat is the low‑wall bench on the left‑hand side, where you can watch the mist hug the cliff face and the sunlight splash the pool in golden shafts. Bring a quick‑dry towel and a waterproof bag for your phone – the spray can reach a metre out. Skip the “guided trek” offered by most hostels; it merely adds a 30‑minute detour through overgrown tracks that lead nowhere. The nearest decent bite is the modest dhaba at Kasauli Road, open 7 am–2 pm, serving aloo‑paratha and chai – perfect fuel before your dip. Visit in late September or early October when the monsoon has receded, the air is crisp and the surrounding pine forests show their autumn colour; July‑August is a slog of leeches and relentless humidity, while winter renders the falls a frozen veneer, beautiful but inaccessible. One afternoon, a few hours, and you’ll leave with a cold shock to your skin and a warm story for any city‑slicker who doubts the Himalayas have anything beyond snow‑capped peaks.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
