Thirteen thematic landings across India — temples, forts, palaces, beaches, monuments, museums, waterfalls, ghats, tombs, parks, markets, gardens, religious sites.
Temples
From Dravidian gopurams to Himalayan monasteries, temples are how much of India tells its own story. Photograph the outsides; be respectful (or absent) inside.
Forts
Rajput hill forts, Deccan sultanate strongholds, and coastal Portuguese redoubts. India's forts trace the shifting rulers — the ramparts survived them all.
Palaces
Marble, mirror-work, courtyards, water gardens. Some are still lived in by former royals, some are now Taj hotels, some are museums. All of them out-scale their photos.
Beaches
Goa's palm-fringed classics, Kerala's crescents, the Andamans' turquoise, Tamil Nadu's fishing villages. The best beaches in India aren't the busiest.
Monuments
The must-see stack: Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, Charminar, Gateway of India. Iconic for a reason — but sunrise, weekday, and a paid guide are how you make them yours.
Museums
India's museums are underrated — the National Museum in Delhi, the Salar Jung in Hyderabad, the Prince of Wales in Mumbai all reward two hours + a decent audio guide.
Waterfalls
Jog, Athirapally, Dudhsagar, Nohkalikai. Best in the second half of the monsoon (Aug-Sep) when they're loud but the roads are open again.
Ghats
The stepped riverbanks of India are working streets — dhobis wash, priests chant, pilgrims bathe, tourists photograph. Varanasi has the most; Kerala's have the ferries.
Tombs
The Mughals built to be remembered. Humayun's Tomb in Delhi is the direct blueprint for the Taj — go in that order for the best story arc.
Parks & reserves
Ranthambhore for tigers, Kaziranga for one-horned rhinos, Bandhavgarh for density, Kanha for space. Book jeep safaris months out for winter dates.
Markets
Chandni Chowk, Colaba Causeway, Devaraja, Laad Bazaar. Go early, bring cash, haggle without being rude, and don't buy anything you can't stuff into a rucksack.
Gardens
Mughal char-baghs, Botanical curiosities, colonial hill-station lawns. The Shalimar in Srinagar and the Botanical in Ooty are the two extremes — both worth an afternoon.
Religious sites
Gurdwaras, dargahs, churches, synagogues, Jain temples, Buddhist monasteries — India is the country where you can visit six faiths in a single day and be welcome at each.
Different lens, same India.
