Shimla Tomb 3

Sufi shrine, qawwali on Thursday evenings.

Curator's note

Shimla Tomb 3, the hardly‑noticed mausoleum tucked behind the Lakkar Bazaar walk‑up, is the only Sufi shrine in the hill capital that still rings with genuine qawwali on Thursday evenings; if you arrive just before sunset, you can hear the low drone of the harmonium from the courtyard while the last pink‑gold light fades over the Mall Road, and you’ll get a seat on the stone bench opposite the copper‑leafed dome without battling the daytime crowds that turn the site into a selfie‑studio for clueless tourists. The tomb itself is a modest ashlar structure dating to the early‑20th century, its carved arches and faded Persian calligraphy better appreciated in the dim after‑dusk than in the harsh winter glare that makes the stone look like cement. Skip the guided “heritage walk” that starts at the Ridge at 9 am – you’ll spend half the time shuffling through poorly informed rickshaws and end up back at the same overcrowded tea stall. Instead, base yourself at a heritage guesthouse on Mall Road, step out for a steaming cup of masala chai at Chachi’s Tea Stall, then make the 5‑minute uphill trek at 4:30 pm; the Thursday session runs until about 7 pm, after which the shrine quiets and you can linger over a plate of aloo tikki from the vendor on the adjacent lane. Late October to early March is the only sensible window – the monsoon fog smothers the acoustics, and the summer heat draws a legion of school groups that drown the music in clatter. One evening here is enough to feel the spiritual undercurrent; stay longer only if you relish hearing the same six verses on repeat.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
