Udaipur
Marble palaces floating on Lake Pichola. Said to be the most romantic city in India — for once, the cliché holds.
Udaipur is the most beautiful city in India, and the most over-photographed. Lake Pichola sits at the centre, white-marble palaces float on it, and at sunset the whole city turns gold. The City Palace complex is a half-day; the Jagdish Temple a quick stop; the smaller Bagore-ki-Haveli has a free dance performance every evening that's better than the paid versions. Cross the lake to Jag Mandir for lunch (not the more famous Lake Palace, which is a Taj hotel and resident-guest only). Udaipur is also the best base for Kumbhalgarh fort (two-hour drive, second-longest continuous wall on earth) and the Jain marble temples of Ranakpur. Three nights minimum.
