Curator's note

Mysore is Karnataka's old royal capital and a half-step gentler than Bangalore. The Mysore Palace at night, lit by 97,000 bulbs every Sunday, is the headline visit; weekday daytimes are cheaper and less crowded. Climb Chamundi Hill at sunrise for the temple and the city view. The Devaraja Market is one of the better fresh-spice markets in south India — buy turmeric, sandalwood oil, and incense at source. Don't miss the Dasara festival in September/October if your dates work — ten days of processions, music and a caparisoned elephant climax. Two nights is the right dose.
