Hampi

A vanished Hindu empire scattered across a boulder-field the size of Manhattan. UNESCO-listed and oddly quiet.

Curator's note

Hampi is the most surreal landscape in India — a UNESCO-listed boulder desert scattered with the ruins of Vijayanagara, the 14th-century capital that was once the second-richest city in the world after Beijing. Cycle or hire a scooter to cover the 25 square kilometres of temples, royal enclosures, and elephant stables. The Virupaksha Temple is still active (and the only thing still standing on the Hampi Bazaar side); cross the river to Anegundi for the lazier, hippier side. Sunrise from Matanga Hill, sunset from Hemakuta. October to February only — summer pushes 45°C.
