Curator's note

Coorg (Kodagu) blows up on the map only when travellers think a misty hill‑station will come with chain‑restaurant cafés and glitch‑y Wi‑Fi, so set your expectations straight: it is a coffee‑scented, pepper‑spiked slab of evergreen that rewards patience more than Instagram. Land in Bengaluru, take the six‑hour drive on NH75 via Nandi Hills and you’ll be greeted by Madikeri’s colonial‑era Rajendra Mall road, a decent base for two nights – the Hotel Tamarind or a plantation homestay in Kushalnagar give you early‑morning sunrise over the Western Ghats and a chance to watch the beans being harvested. Non‑negotiable stops are Abbey Falls (arrive before 10 am to avoid the weekend crowd), Raja’s Seat at sunset (the view over the coffee estates is worth the 15‑minute climb), and Talacauvery at sunrise – the ritual of pouring water into the sacred spring is oddly moving when the mist hugs the valley. If you can spare a day, drive to Dubare Elephant Camp for a guided river‑bank trek (don’t expect riding the pachyderms, the programme is short and heavily regulated). Skip the over‑touristed Raja’s Seat cafe on the way down; the tea stall on the hill road serves far better filter coffee. Monsoon (June–September) turns the roads into mud‑jams and the waterfalls into dangerous torrents, so the sweet spot is October to early March when the climate is brisk, the foliage is still lush, and the homestay cooks serve a hot cup of Kadumbuttu with pork curry that feels like a secret. Two days is honest; three lets you slip into the less‑visited Tadiandamol trek without feeling rushed.
