Coorg National Park

National park; tigers if you are very, very lucky.

Curator's note

Coorg National Park—officially Nagarhole, despite the tourist‑friendly re‑branding—is a dense, monsoon‑swept stretch of Western Ghats where tigers exist but will only reveal themselves if you are patient, lucky, and equipped with a decent guide from the nearby town of Heggadadevana kote. Arrive in early June or late October; the pre‑monsoon rush offers verdant foliage and fewer crowds, while post‑monsoon brings leeches and sudden river swell. Base yourself in a modest homestay on the Coffee Board Road—Mulluvadi Guesthouse is decent and within a thirty‑minute drive to the park gate. The 6 km trek to the Kabini backwaters viewpoint is overrated; you’ll see more wildlife from the short 2 km Kabini River walk, where you can spot sambar, barking deer and, if the wind is right, a tiger silhouette against the mist. Hire the official park ranger guide; private operators will charge a premium for the same service and often push a “night safari” that is nothing but a torch‑lit stroll through mud. Skip the elephant‑back safaris unless you enjoy shaking on a wobbling beast for half an hour. Pack waterproof boots, a sturdy pair of binoculars and a thermos of strong Kaapi—there’s no better way to stay alert when the jungle sounds swell at dusk. Two days is honest, three lets you fit in a morning bird‑watch at Brahmagiri and a sunset tea at the tea‑plantation viewpoint without feeling rushed.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
