Mysore National Park 2

National park; tigers if you are very, very lucky.

Curator's note

Mysore National Park, tucked behind the palace and the bustling Karanji Lake promenade, is a half‑day detour for the impatient traveller and a full‑day pilgrimage for the patient, tiger‑themed wanderer. The only realistic chance of spotting a tiger is the early‑morning jeep safari that departs from the park office at 6 am; aim for a weekday in November or February when the underbrush is thin and the heat is tolerable – the monsoon swamps the tracks, the summer scorch drives the cats deeper into shade, and the festive rush of October sees the guides more interested in souvenir sales than wildlife. Book the 4‑hour “Full‑Circle” circuit rather than the shorter “Mysore Express” – the extra kilometre includes a brief crossing of the Kaveri at the ancient Ooriyur bridge, where you’ll see sloth bears foraging beside a colony of vervet monkeys that will steal your snack if you’re not vigilant. Park the car at the JSS Road entrance, leave your peripherals at the boutique café on Devaraja Market Road, and settle at the shaded stone bench near the Mahadev Temple; it offers a view of the teak canopy that is far better than the overpriced observatory deck at the north gate. Skip the night safari – the floodlights frighten the nocturnal fauna and the “glow‑in‑the‑dark” gimmick is more for tourists than for naturalists. And, if you’re hoping to walk the entire 6‑km trail, bring a bottle of water, a sturdy pair of slip‑resistant shoes and the patience to wait for a creature that may never appear; the park’s real reward is the silence between the distant calls of birds and the occasional rustle of a shy pangolin.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
