Chikmagalur

Granite temples, palm fringes and filter coffee. The food is older than most countries.

Curator's note

Chikmagalur is the sort of hill‑station that rewards a lazy, caffeine‑fueled itinerary more than a packed schedule; arrive in October–December when the mist has lifted but the tea‑green tea‑plantations still cling to the air. Base yourself in the modest colonial guesthouse on Hoysala Road or the boutique homestay on Madikeri Road – both sit within a ten‑minute walk of the Coffee Museum, where a single sip of a single‑origin brew from the Baba Budan estate feels oddly reverential. The non‑negotiables are a sunrise trek to Mullayanagiri, Karnataka’s highest peak, and a late‑afternoon drive up to Baba Budangiri for the shrine and the ruined coffee‑plantation ruins that still smell of roasted beans; hire a local guide from the town square rather than the generic tour operator, who will otherwise waste your time on over‑hyped waterfalls. Skip the overcrowded Hebbe Falls unless you’re visiting on a weekday; the off‑road trek is treacherous after monsoon and the crowd is a noisy scramble of selfie‑sticks. A half‑day in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, entered via the jeep‑track from Kadthala, offers a real glimpse of the Western Ghats’ biodiversity, but be prepared for leaky roofs and a strict no‑litter policy. Two days is honest; four lets you linger over a traditional Kadubu breakfast at a roadside dhaba and savour the quiet of the coffee‑plantation trails without the tourist bustle. Avoid the July‑August monsoon, when the roads turn to rivers and the only thing you’ll be drinking is rainwater.
