Chikmagalur Beach 2

A 3km arc of pale sand and palm-and-tin shacks.

Curator's note

Chikmagalur Beach 2 is the sort of forgotten strip that makes you question whether you ever really needed a coastline at all – a three‑kilometre arc of bleached sand, a handful of rust‑stained tin shacks, and rows of palm fronds that sway more out of habit than breeze. The most sensible way to encounter it is at low tide, just after the sunrise, when the water recedes enough to expose the mottled shells that line the shore and the net‑workers from nearby villages set out their simple breakfast of miḍi rotti and fresh coconut water. Grab a plastic stool from the shack called “Sea‑Side Dhaba” on the north‑most point, order the masala peanuts – they’re the only thing that actually tastes like a snack here – and sit with your back to the endless horizon, watching the few early walkers from Kadur dump their tin‑trays into the surf. Skip the over‑priced sunset “beach party” that pops up on the southern end after 5 pm; the crowds are louder than the tide and the parasols are nothing but cheap canvas. The best time to visit is between late October and early March when the monsoon has cleared the silt and the air carries a faint smell of coffee from the hills inland. A single night’s stay in a modest homestay at Kadur, with a shared bathroom and a shared laugh, is more honest than any boutique resort you’ll find on Google.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
