Vizag

Granite temples, palm fringes and filter coffee. The food is older than most countries.

Curator's note

Vizag flirts with the idea of a coastal megacity while still looking for its soul, so brace for a rhythm that alternates between gleaming docks and ramshackle beach shacks. Land at MAA and head straight to RK Beach at sunrise; the promenade is wide enough to dodge the endless traffic of Chandra Harish and the gull‑filled chaos, and an early‑morning chai from the battered stall opposite the lighthouse beats any hotel lobby. The non‑negotiable views are the Rock‑filled Marine Drive stretch from Submarine Museum to Dolphin’s Nose – linger for the sea‑to‑mountain panorama, then walk down to Kailasagiri for a cable‑car ride that’s more Instagram than insight, but the hilltop offers the best sweep of the port’s industrial hulls. For food, ditch the tourist‑cooked fish fry on Beach Road and chase a plate of fresh Chepala Pulusu at Annapurna Mess in Dwaraka Nagar, followed by a sudden‑sweet bite of Bobbatlu from a street vendor near Jagadamba. Stay in the old‑colonial quarter of Siripuram for decent boutique hotels; avoid the pricier Taj‑branded properties in the IT corridor unless you need a guaranteed Wi‑Fi sanctuary. Two days is honest – one for the coastline, one for the steel‑town museums (Hindustan Shipyard tour, Naval Museum). Skip the night‑market at Dwaraka for anything earlier than November; the monsoon rains turn the city’s slick roads into a treacherous river of oil. November to February is the only window when the heat is tolerable and the sea holds a bite.
