Curator's note

Thiruvananthapuram is a paradox wrapped in a palm‑leaf fan: the Indian capital that feels like a university town, a beach resort and a space‑age enclave in one cramped 215‑sq‑km sprawl, and you’ll only appreciate the contradictions if you surrender the expectation of seamless “city‑culture”. Set base in the East Fort‑area around M.G. Road – a modest boutique in the former Kuttichira guesthouse lets you step straight onto the colonial façade of the Napier Museum, then wander to the teak‑pillared Kuthiramalika Palace where the royal‑family still keeps a few relics dusty and useless. The real pull is the 5 km stretch of coastline: start early at Shangumukham, where the fishermen still launch their catamarans, move south to Veli Lake for a breezy paddle‑boat at sunrise, and finish at Kovalam’s Lighthouse Beach for a quiet bite of pepper‑crusted fish curry at a shacks‑only stall. Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple is obligatory, but go at 8 am on a weekday to avoid the crush of worshippers and the smell of incense that clings to every garment. If you’re a tech‑curious nomad, a half‑day at Technopark’s cafeteria is a reminder that the city also houses India’s largest IT park; the juxtaposition of silicon and sandalwood feels deliberately ironic. Two days is honest for the heritage sites and the coast, four if you want to sneak in a day trip to the nearby Ponmudi hills for tea‑laden vistas. Avoid the monsoon months of June–August – the city turns water‑logged and the coastal roads become treacherous – and aim for November to February when the humidity is tolerable and the temples are lit by a crisp, golden light. Skip the over‑hyped Soorya Malls; the local market on Chalai Road offers fresher produce and far fewer fluorescent predators.
