McLeodganj National Park 2

National park; tigers if you are very, very lucky.

Curator's note

McLeodganj National Park 2 sits on the fringe of the hills above the Tibetan enclave, and the only thing you’ll reliably spot there are flocks of hill‑partridges and the occasional yaks‑herding shepherd; spotting a tiger is about as likely as finding a Wi‑Fi signal at the top of a pine‑scented ridge, so keep your expectations in check. The best window is October to early March, when the mist lifts by noon and the treks from the Gora‑Chaugan trail to the hidden waterfall at Bhagsu are comfortably cool; monsoon clouds turn the paths into sludge and the summer sun will melt any urge to linger. Stay at the modest guesthouse on Joginder Nagar Road – it’s within walking distance of the park gate and offers a rooftop that catches a spectacular sunrise over the Dhauladhar range, far better than the over‑photographed tea‑shop vista on Main Bazaar. Skip the half‑hour “guided jeep safari” advertised at the reception desk; the park’s rangers rarely run vehicles beyond the pine‑grove perimeter and you’ll waste cash while the forest itself is free to explore on foot. Instead, hire a local guide at the tea stall near the Dal Lake view point; he’ll point out the elusive leopard tracks near the stream and the endemic Himalayan salamander you’d otherwise miss. Pack a waterproof jacket, plenty of water, and a sturdy pair of boots – the rocky scrambles near the upper ridge are slippery after a drizzle. If you’re after a tiger, book a day trip to Rajaji National Park instead; here, the real reward is the quiet that settles over the pine‑filled valleys once the tourist buses have pulled away.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
