Kolkata Falls 3
Drops 80m into a pool you can swim in by 11am.
Kolkata Falls 3, the unassuming cascade tucked behind the ramshackle warehouses of the old Beliaghata dockyard, is the only place in the city where you can actually dip into a natural pool without fighting a traffic jam. The fall plummets roughly eighty metres over a sheer granite lip and pools at the base between two crumbling arches; by eleven a.m. the water is still cold enough to shock even the most seasoned swimmer, but the early‑morning haze keeps the crowds at bay – after that the spot becomes a selfie‑snare for tourists with plastic bottles and a soundtrack of squealing children. The best perch is the battered stone bench on the left bank, near the rusted pump house; bring a mat, a change of socks and a waterproof camera because the spray will soak any exposed electronics. Skip the overpriced tea stall that sprouted on the right in the past year – the chai is weak and the proprietor will try to charge you for a “view”. The falls are best visited in late October to early February when the monsoon tantrums have subsided, the air is crisp and the water retains a faint turquoise hue. Two hours is honest; anything longer feels like a forced pilgrimage to a waterfall that, despite its size, is more a hidden trickle than a tourist spectacle.
