The Oberoi Amarvilas

Every room looks onto the Taj Mahal, 600m away.

Why we picked it

The Oberoi Amarvilas is the only place in Agra where you can watch the Taj Mahal blush at sunrise without having to scramble from a Chaitya to a cramped balcony; each of the 62 suites and rooms is purposely angled a mere 600 metres from the marble mausoleum, so the view is never a gimmick but a constant, unobstructed backdrop. Arrive the night before a full moon, book the Jharokha suite for its private garden lounge that opens onto the river, and claim the sunrise seat on the marble terrace at 5:30 am – the staff will quietly usher you past the lobby’s silk‑screened tea service and hand you a glass of chilled masala chai, a gesture that feels more authentic than the obligatory royal‑candle‑dinner. Avoid the monsoon months of July and August; the humidity turns the marble’s shine into a greasy film and the garden’s fragrant roses wilt. The in‑house spa, while lush, competes with the world‑class spa at the nearby ITC Mughal in price, so book only if you truly need a post‑flight massage. The hotel’s “Taj‑view” lunch buffet is a tourist trap – the same dishes are served better and cheaper at the nearby Pinch of Spice on Sadar Bazaar. Stay three nights if you want to indulge in the private boat ride on the Yamuna at dusk; otherwise, a single night will suffice to experience the sightline that makes the price tag tolerable.
