Trident Kolkata Lodge

Lodge in Kolkata. Misted, monastic, mountainous.

Why we picked it

Trident Kolkata Lodge sits on the Ganges‑bank fringe of the city, more a cloister than a conventional hotel, and its whole ambience is mist‑soaked, monastic, almost mountainous in the way the river’s fog rolls in at dawn. Arrive before 8 a.m. for the sunrise walk along the riverfront promenade; the view of the Howrah Bridge silhouetted against the pale light is worth the brisk jog. Rooms are spacious but unpretentious, with teak‑fibre curtains that dampen the perpetual humidity – request the “east‑facing” tier if you want the early light, otherwise the west side gets a relentless glare after noon. The in‑house Chai Bar, tucked behind the lobby’s marble column, serves a surprisingly robust Darjeeling chai with a dash of cardamom; sit on the low stools at the river side window for the best people‑watching, especially when the city’s boda‑boda rickshaws thunder by. The all‑day buffet is competent but over‑priced; skip the mid‑day spread and instead opt for the à‑la‑carte dinner at 7 p.m., where the smoked hilsa and mustard‑seed prawn curry truly shine. Spa treatments are limited to a standard massage – book it for the next morning, as the after‑hours quiet of the lodge makes for a far more meditative experience than the bustling downtown spas. Avoid monsoon weeks (July–September) when the river’s rise can swamp the lower terraces; November to early March offers gentle weather and the occasional mist that makes the lodge feel like a sanctuary perched on a hill. If you crave nightlife, look elsewhere – the lodge’s bar closes at 10 p.m., and the nearest clubs are a taxi ride away in Park Street. Two nights is honest for a relaxed stay; three lets you linger over the river’s changing moods without feeling rushed.
