The Oberoi Jaipur Retreat

Retreat in Jaipur. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

The Oberoi Jaipur Retreat sits on a three‑acre enclave just beyond the bustle of the historic walled city, a stone’s throw from Jaleb Chowk and a 10‑minute walk up the winding lanes that lead to the Nahargarh Fort; this isolation is its selling point, but it also means you’ll have to budget a taxi from the airport rather than rely on cheap auto‑rickshaws. Check‑in at sunrise and you’ll catch the marble lobby bathed in the soft amber that makes the age‑old frescoes look deliberately Instagrammable, yet the patina is genuine – the property is a 1970s conversion of a Rajasthani haveli, so creaking wooden doors and occasional drafts are part of the charm, not a flaw. The 68 rooms are all air‑conditioned, but the best view comes from the top‑floor Heritage Suite, where a private terrace overlooks the jagged silhouette of the Aravalli hills; it’s worth splurging for the sunrise over the pink‑hued forts, then retreating to the in‑house restaurant, Khaan, for a thali that respects the local palate – the dal baati churma here beats the lobby buffet by a mile. The spa, a converted courtyard, is excellent for a post‑sightseeing soak, but the treatment menu leans heavily on Western aromatherapy, so if you crave Ayurvedic rituals, look elsewhere. Two nights is honest; a third lets you enjoy a lazy morning at the garden pool while the city heats up in May and June. The ideal window is late October to early March, when the desert chill makes the heated marble floors a welcome contrast. Skip the complimentary evening high‑tea – the tea is fine but the crowd is tourist‑aimed and the seating is cramped, and you’ll find better chaats in the nearby Chandpole market.
