Zorawar Fort, perched on the western fringe of Leh’s old bazaar, is the only Dogra relic you’ll meet in a region that otherwise reveres its Buddhist heritage, and it deserves a quick stop if you’re already tracing the Silk Road circuit. Built in 1836 for General Zorawar Singh, the stone‑brick ramparts house a modest museum that smugly displays a jumble of Dogra coinage, postage stamps and the hoarded jewellery that once padded the dynasty’s coffers; the collection is more curios than masterpieces, but the view of the Leh townscape from the top parapet – especially at sunset when the pale basilicas catch the last light – vindicates the climb up the narrow spiral stair. The fort opens at 9 am; aim for a mid‑morning slot to avoid the heat that makes the interior air feel like a sauna, and give yourself thirty minutes to scroll through the exhibits before the crowd from Leh’s backpacker hostels swarms in. Stay in the nearby market guesthouse on Yi Hammen Street for a roof within walking distance, and skip the “guided tours” that charge extra for nothing more than pointing out the cannon that never fired. Late July and August bring monsoon dust storms that can close the path, so plan your visit between late May and early October; three hours is honest, four lets you linger on the rooftop with a chai and watch the city transition from dusty bustle to quiet night.
