Curator's note

Wayanad’s most photo‑flooded cascade, the 80‑metre plunge at Meenmutty, finally earns a mention if you’re willing to sacrifice a half‑day for the slog up the 2 km jeep track – otherwise it’s a glorified puddle for the Instagram crowd. Aim for the week after the monsoon, late February to early May, when the water has thinned enough to wade but still roars, and arrive by 10:30 am; the crowd peaks at 11 am and the pool below becomes a chaotic splash‑zone of motorbike tourists. The only decent spot to sit is the small rocky ledge on the left bank, just beyond the first viewing platform: bring a water‑proof mat, a bottle of coconut water and skip the overpriced tea stall at the parking lot – the tea is weak and the crowd is relentless. If you’re keen on a swim, the natural pool at the base is safe only until the early afternoon, after which the current picks up and the water churns; a quick dip before 1 pm is all you’ll get. For the truly lazy, the tea‑shop on the main road offers a view of the falls without the trek, but the experience is as flat as the tea itself. Two hours total, a sturdy pair of shoes and a willingness to ignore the crowds, and you’ll have a genuine Wayanad waterfall moment.
