Curator's note

Waddepally Lake is the unglamorous water‑eye of Hanikonda, the sort of place locals use to cool a shoe and tourists use to snap a blurry sunset on Instagram. Arrive early—by 6 am—when the surface is still and the joggers from Pochampally Road are the only witnesses to the rickety tea stall that sells masala chai in a tin cup; the early light makes the mud‑brown water look almost respectable. The lake’s real draw is the sprawling promenade on its north‑side, where families spread mats for chai‑and‑samosa picnics and the occasional street musician attempts a version of “Maa Talli”. Skip the southern embankment after noon; the concrete steps are a dumping ground for construction debris and the smell of rotting fish is a warning not to linger. Nearby, the Museum of Telangana History on Jubilee Hills Road offers a quick cultural fix if you’ve exhausted the lake’s limited charm. For accommodation, the modest Guest House on Gopi Bagh Road is decent, with clean fans and a rooftop that gives a decent view of the lake’s glitter at dusk, provided you can tolerate the occasional mosquito. Visit in the cooler months—November through February—when the heat isn’t oppressive and the occasional breeze makes the lake’s surface ripple rather than stew. Two hours is honest; anything longer feels like a polite way of saying you’re stuck in a town that has better things to show, like the historic Warangal Fort a short auto‑rickshaw ride away.
