Vijaygad Fort
Vijaygad Fort / is a fort located 60 km from Chiplun, in Ratnagiri district, of Maharashtra. This fort is located north of the Jaigad Fort on the northern bank of shastri river creek.
Vijaygad Fort is the sort of off‑the‑beaten‑track ruin that feels like a private invitation, but it comes with a hitch: the road from Chiplun to the creek‑side steps is a pothole‑strewn rickety stretch that saps half your stamina before you even spot the crumbling stone walls. Arrive at sunrise, when the mist lifts off the Shastri River and the fort’s silhouette glints against the western hills; the light makes the graffiti‑marred bastions oddly photogenic, and the heat is still tolerable. The main gate, a rusted lintel half‑buried in scrub, leads to a modest citadel with a lone cannon and a ruined watchtower that offers a surprisingly clear view of Jaigad Fort across the water. Skip the half‑hour ‘guided tour’ that stalls at the tea‑stall‑run shop – you’ll get the same history from a tin‑foil hat on the internet. Stay the night in the modest guesthouse at Karde, a few kilometres inland, to catch the sunset over the creek and a quiet dinner of fresh konkan fish. Two hours is enough to see the fort; three hours lets you linger on the cliff edge and feel the wind that once warned Mughal ships. Avoid monsoon July‑August; the creek floods and the path becomes a mudslide.
