Curator's note

Varun Sagar Lake, the modest artificial spill that sits on the outskirts of Ajmer, is not a bucket‑list miracle but a decent stop if you’ve already squeezed the Dargah and Ana Sagar into a day. The lake’s shallow waters reflect the occasional camel‑thorn tree and, at sunrise, the early‑morning air carries a thin mist that makes the surrounding sand‑dusty scrub look tolerably photogenic – just be ready for a swarm of early‑birds and the occasional stray goat wandering between the concrete footpaths. The best viewpoint is the small, under‑maintained promenade on the east bank near the modest fishing‑village of Khwaja, where you can sip a chai from the roadside stall that sells masala tea with a dash of jaggery; the chai is the only thing that feels genuinely local here. Parking is free but three‑hourly security checks are a nuisance, and the only restroom is a cracked, un‑lit facility that smells of yesterday’s incense. If you’re travelling in summer, bring plenty of water and a hat – the heat bakes the concrete to an unforgiving 45 °C. November to February is the only window when the humidity drops and the lake’s surface actually mirrors the distant Aravalli ridge. Skip the lake if you’re on a tight schedule: a half‑day in Ajmer is better spent exploring the Adhai‑Din Ka Jhonpra mosque or taking a short train ride to the hill‑top pilgrimage of Pushkar. Two hours at Varun Sagar is honest; any longer feels like waiting for the tide that never comes.
