Varanasi Beach

A 3km arc of pale sand and palm-and-tin shacks.

Curator's note

Varanasi Beach is a 3 km arc of bleached sand that feels more like a misplaced resort than a riverside miracle, the sort of place you stumble upon when a misguided development board thought the Ganges needed a “sun‑bather’s sanctuary”. Palm‑and‑tin shacks line the promenade, each shouting the same menu: masala chai, pani puri in a paper cone and the obligatory “fresh” fish fry that is, in reality, a rehashed batch from the nearest wholesale market. Go in late October to early March; the brutal summer swelter turns the water into a steaming blanket and the monsoon washes the makeshift stalls away for weeks. Arrive at sunrise and claim a spot under the cracked orange awning of Shanti’s Beach Café on Ganga Bhandar Road – the early light makes the sand look almost respectable and the crowd is limited to a few joggers and the occasional yoga group. Skip the evening “candle‑lit” dinner on the jetty: the lights are just hackles of cheap floodlamps and the sea breeze quickly turns the atmosphere stale. The only redeeming feature is the quiet stretch beyond the main boardwalk, past the half‑built sculpture of a reclining Buddha, where the Ganges actually laps at the shore and you can hear the city’s distant bells without the din of street vendors. Stay in a heritage guesthouse in the old city, not the glossy river‑front boutique – the extra commute through the narrow alleys is worth the price of authenticity. Two hours is honest; if you linger past noon the heat and the crowds will make you wish you’d booked a boat on the ghats instead.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
