Curator's note

Vallabhgad Fort sits 57 km north‑west of Belgaum, perched on the ragged Khadya ridge just off the Pune‑Bangalore highway, and it is the sort of off‑the‑beaten‑track ruin that deserves a day‑trip only if you can stomach a dusty climb and a lack of visitor services. The drive via NH48 to Hukkeri is smooth, but the last kilometre is a rough, pothole‑strewn track that ends at a stair‑steped path cutting through scrub; a sturdy pair of shoes and a water bottle are non‑negotiable. The fort’s stone walls are a patchwork of Maratha and later British additions, with the lone bastion offering a panoramic view of the surrounding paddy fields that is worth the slog, but expect no interpretive signs, no café and very few other tourists—most will be local school groups. The only real highlight is the modestly preserved gatehouse on the east side, where a stubbornly functional cannon still points towards the plain; beyond that the ruins are more romantic backdrop than historical narrative. Stay the night in Belgaum (the Government Guesthouse on Court Road is decent and cheap) and aim to visit early on a cool November‑February morning; the summer heat turns the hill into an oven and the monsoons render the path treacherously slick. Skip the “guided tours” that charge Rs 1 500 for a half‑hour walk—self‑exploration is faster, cheaper, and far less staged. If you have only a few hours, consider the nearby Ramtirth temple instead; the fort itself is a rewarding detour only for the truly adventurous.
