Curator's note

Usgalimal, a tiny hamlet tucked into the Western Ghats of South Goa, is the only place in the state where you can actually see a genuine prehistoric canvas rather than a meme‑filled beach boardwalk. The petroglyphs, etched into granitic boulders on the left bank of the Kushavati River, date back to the Neolithic‑Bronze Age (roughly 4,000‑2,500 BC) and depict hunting scenes, geometric motifs and what look suspiciously like early attempts at map‑making; they are the sort of quiet, awe‑inducing experience you get only after hunting down a site on Google Maps and ignoring the crowds at Palolem. Reach Usgalimal via the narrow, pothole‑strewn road off NH 66 at Baina, park the car at the modest, government‑run information board, then scramble down a steep, uneven path – sturdy boots are mandatory, as the trail is more a scramble than a walk. The best light is the low oblique sun of early morning (around 07:30 hrs) when shadows carve the figures into depth; by midday the carvings flatten into indistinct scratches. There are no cafés, just a lone tea stall at the river’s edge; pack water, a protein bar and a hat, because the nearest toilet is a rusted shack in the neighbouring village of Canacona. Two hours is honest for a focused look; linger longer only if you fancy sketching or listening to the river’s endless chatter. Visit between November and February to avoid the monsoon’s relentless humidity, and skip the December school trips that turn the site into a noisy, supervised carousel. Stay the night in nearby Palolem or Agonda – cheap beachfront dorms are plentiful – and treat Usgalimal as a morning side‑trip rather than a destination in itself; the real reward is the feeling that you have stepped onto a 4,000‑year‑old storyboard while the rest of Goa is still selling you coconut‑water cocktails.
