Curator's note

Ujjain’s Temple 2 is the kind of unremarkable shrine that survives because the Mahakaleshwar complex swallows the tourist’s attention. A squat granite gopuram crowns the entrance, its silhouette a reminder that you’re not in a mall but a centuries‑old sanctum; step inside after the noon aarti and you’ll find the inner hall lit solely by oil‑lamps, the flicker casting a respectable gloom that makes smartphones feel gauche. Photography is strictly prohibited, so leave your camera at the hotel or, better yet, use the moment to practice the one thing the city excels at: patience. The real draw is the ritual timing – the early‑morning bhog at 4:30 am and the midnight bhog at 12:00 am are the only moments when the resident priests actually look up from their work. If you must stay, grab a seat on the low marble bench opposite the main sanctum; it’s free, it’s uncomfortable, but it lets you hear the low chant of the Mahaprasad distribution. Skip the glossy guide‑book advice to “tour every temple in a day” – the crowds at Temple 2 surge after the main Mahakaleshwar rites and the interior gets stifling. Visit in October or November when the monsoon has receded, the air is crisp and the lamps burn brighter against the clear night. The nearest budget stay is the Kuber Guesthouse on Bada Bazaar lane; it’s a ten‑minute walk, has a reliable ceiling fan and a tea kettle that hardly ever works, but you’ll be close enough to slip in before the morning rush and out before the evening throng.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
