Curator's note

Visakhapatnam’s TU‑142 Aircraft Museum is a kitschy, half‑finished tribute to a Cold War bomber that will satisfy the occasional aviation nerd while testing the patience of anyone else. The aircraft – a Tupolev Tu‑142MK‑E stripped of its original navy paint and repainted in gaudy orange and white – sits on a concrete pad on Beach Road, just opposite the bustling RK Beach promenade. It’s easiest to reach by auto‑rickshaw from the Dwaraka Nagar train station; the walk from the nearest bus stop is a slog through street vendors selling roasted peanuts and cheap water. Inside, the cockpit is cramped, the instrumentation is mostly missing and the only interpretive signage is a two‑colour flyer printed in Hindi and English. If you’re determined to snap a selfie with the nose cone, aim for the early morning light before the midday sun turns the metal into a glare‑fest. The museum opens 9 a.m.–6 p.m. all week except Tuesdays, but be prepared for a small entry fee and a queue of school groups. In short, allocate an hour, bring a sense of irony, and skip the museum if you’re after serious history; the real draw of Vizag remains the seafood‑laden cafés of Dwaraka Nagar and the sunset‑splashed RK Beach.
