Curator's note

Teerathgarh Falls, the show‑off of Bastar, is worth a single day’s detour from Jagdalpur if you can stomach the early‑morning trek and the inevitable tourist crowds that swell after 10 am. Start at the parking lot on the Kanger Valley road and catch the first shuttle‑bus to the base of the descent; the steep, fern‑lined steps are unforgiving, but the 91‑metre plunge into the emerald plunge pool makes the sweat worthwhile, especially at sunrise when the mist catches the light and the usual throng is thin. Stick to the left‑hand trail that leads to the lower viewpoint – the right side is overrun with vendors selling cheap plastic bottled water and selfie sticks, and the view is obstructed by a poorly maintained railing. Pack a light lunch of bhutta (roasted corn) and a bottle of jaggery‑sweetened chaas from the stall at Gadi‑Mahal, and try the local fish fry at the tea‑shop near the main bridge for a proper taste of Bastar. Shelter from the monsoon downpours is non‑existent, so plan your visit between November and March; the falls are spectacular year‑round but the water can surge dramatically in July–September, turning the trails into slippery hazards. Stay the night in Jagdalpur’s modest guesthouses on Rani Road for easy access to the next day’s attractions – the Kanger Ghati National Park and the ancient cave paintings at Kailash Cave – and you’ll leave with more than a postcard‑perfect snapshot of the falls.
