Curator's note

Talakona, tucked in the shrubby sprawl of Sri Venkateswara National Park, is the sort of wilderness escape that feels like a concession to the over‑populated Tirupati hinterland. The 270‑foot plunge at Talakona Falls is the state’s highest, but the spectacle is best savoured in the early monsoon months of September to November, when the water thunders over the basaltic ledges and the forest floor smells of wet pine; the summer heat turns the pool into a lukewarm disappointment and the winter mist can make the trek slippery. Arrive via the Kadapa‑to‑Tirupati road and park at the modest government guesthouse on the hilltop – private resorts flirt with “eco‑luxury” tags but often charge double for a single fan‑blown room. The hike to the falls is a 1.5‑km gravel climb through tea‑tree scrub, and the path is littered with makeshift stalls selling boiled peanuts and sweet‑scented incense; don’t be tempted to buy the cheap amulets, they’re as touristy as a souvenir t‑shirt. Near the cascade lies the Siddheswara Swamy Temple, a stone‑built shrine that attracts pilgrims more than trekkers; the chanting can be loud, so if you’re after quiet, time your visit for mid‑day when worshippers are scarce. Two days is honest: one for the falls and the temple, the second for spotting crested goshawks, sloth bears and the occasional wild boar that may roam the tea‑plantations. Skip the “night safari” tours advertised by agencies – the park is poorly illuminated and the chances of actually seeing anything beyond a lantern‑wielding guide are slim. Go in November, stay in the guesthouse, lace up sturdy boots, and you’ll leave with a decent waterfall photo and a genuine taste of Andhra’s forested heart.
