Curator's note

The film Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story is a 2005 melodrama that tries desperately to cash in on the monument’s brand, and you’ll quickly realise it’s more costume‑drama than cinema. Kabir Bedi plays Shah Jahan with the gravitas of a tired stage‑coach, while Sonya Jehan, the director’s daughter, is cast as Mumtaz in a perfunctory love‑triangle that never extends beyond rehearsed vows on a set resembling a pastel postcard. Manisha Koirala’s supporting turn feels like a cameo designed to lure her fans, and the rest of the ensemble – Arbaaz Khan, Vaquar Shaikh, Rahil Azam, Pooja Batra – shuffle through a script that strings together clichés about imperial grandeur, court intrigue and a tragic romance that has been told a thousand times better elsewhere. The production values are decent; the recreated diwan‑hall and garden pavilions look convincing enough for a quick Instagram snap, but the real Taj Mahal is nowhere near this gaudy re‑creation. If you’re in Agra for the marble mausoleum itself, skip the 2‑hour screening at the nearby multiplex – the site’s sunrise view from the Yamuna banks outshines any contrived love story. The only reason to endure the film is sheer curiosity about Sonya Jehan’s debut; otherwise, book a guide, watch the sunrise, and leave the cinematic romance to Bollywood’s more competent biopics.
