Curator's note

The Modhera Sun Temple is a sun‑worshipper’s cheat‑sheet for 11th‑century Gujarati ambition, perched on the banks of the meagre Pushpavati where the monsoon turns the reservoir into a shallow mirror rather than a pool. Show up at sunrise in October or November; the low‑angle light throws the sculpted friezes of the Gūḍhamanḍapa into crisp relief and you’ll finally see why the temple is called a “Sun” temple. The Sabhamanḍapa, with its twelve‑columned hall and crowded bas‑relief of deities, is worth a linger, but the real draw is the step‑well Kunḍa: descend the tiered stairs past tiny shrines and you’ll feel the same claustrophobic awe as a 1,000‑year‑old pilgrim. Skip the interior worship‑room; the ASI has stripped it of altars and left a hollowed‑out space that feels more museum than sanctuary. Stay the night in the modest guesthouses of the nearby village of Modhera or the slightly more comfortable heritage inn at Patan; both give you a sensible base for a late‑afternoon drive to the Rani ki Vav. Don’t bother with the cramped souvenir stalls on the highway—buy a carved wooden box in Ahmedabad instead. Two hours is honest for the temple; three if you want to linger over the sunset that finally lights the stepped reservoir.
