Spiti Stupa 3

Built to mark something the locals still argue about.

Curator's note

Spiti Stupa 3 sits on the lone ridge overlooking Kaza, a concrete silhouette that locals still argue marks the “site of the ancient pilgrim’s vision” – a story as nebulous as the high‑altitude wind. The only decent view is at first light; park your rickety jeep at the gravel pull‑off on the Manali‑Kaza highway, climb the 15‑metre stone steps and linger until the sun claws the Himalaya awake, then the stupa’s whitewashed face glows against the arid blue. Skip the tourist‑crazed evenings when impromptu prayer circles block the panorama and the air turns bone‑dry; the day‑time silence is worth the chill. Stay at the modest Hotel Triveni in Kaza – it’s warm, cheap and a short 10‑minute walk, so you can return for a hot cup of butter tea before the crowd thins. The rough track from Komic to the stupa is impassable after a late‑spring thaw, so avoid July–August; late September to early November offers clear skies and manageable temperatures. Don’t waste time hunting for a “guided tour” – there isn’t one, and the only guide you’ll need is a local teenager who will point out the rusted prayer wheels and the fissure where a monk once disappeared. Two hours is enough to absorb the solitude; longer feels like a pilgrimage you never asked for.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
