Sonda, Karnataka
Sonda is a village near Sirsi in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka in India.
Sonda is the tiny, unglamorous outpost that most travellers to Uttara Kannada overlook in favour of Sirsi’s waterfalls, yet its 11th‑century Shree Sonda Mahaganapati temple, perched on a low hill above the Tadadi River, is the only reason to swing a motorbike off the NH‑66 and park in the gravel yard of the lone tea‑shop on Kalaburagi Road. Aim for early morning – the Sankranti‑time sunrise hits the stone shikhara with a soft gold that the midday heat will mercilessly bleach, and the village is still silent enough to hear the distant chant of the priest. Skip the crumbling hostel in the bazaar; a modest homestay in nearby Sirsi (preferably in the colonial‑style Deva Guest House) offers a hot breakfast of akki rotti and fresh coconut chutney before you trek the steep, uneven path to the sanctum. The temple’s dravidian carvings are impressive but the surrounding paddy fields and the occasional goat‑herded street market provide the real texture. Two hours is enough for the shrine and a quick tea; anything longer feels like a filler between the real draws of Sirsi’s Unchalli Falls and the Bhagavathi temple in the town centre. Avoid monsoon‑season (July‑September) when the river swells and the path becomes a slip‑slide.
