Solomon's Temple, Aizawl
Solomon's Temple is a church located in Aizawl, Mizoram, India.
Solomon’s Temple sits on the hill‑top of Bawngkawn, a few kilometres north of Aizawl’s bustling New Market, and despite its grandiose name it is just a modest Baptist church with pastel‑coloured plaster and a clock tower that chimes for the faithful at 7 am and 6 pm. The real draw is the panorama: from the verandah you can see the city’s concrete sprawl, the winding River Tuirial and the mist‑shrouded hills that frame Mizoram’s “seven sisters”. Arrive after the midday heat, ideally around 3 pm, when the light softens and the sky turns a bruised violet; the view is worth the 30‑minute walk up the steep, uneven lane of Bawngkawn Road, which is peppered with roadside stalls selling thukpa and fried bamboo shoots. Dress conservatively—no sleeveless tops or shorts—as worship still occurs on Sundays and a quiet, respectful presence is expected. Skip the interior if you’re not interested in the modest pulpit and stained‑glass panels depicting biblical scenes; the glass is a cheap replica and the acoustics are notoriously echoey. A night visit is possible when the tower’s lantern flickers, but the street lights are dim and the area feels isolated after dark, so a taxi from the city centre is advisable. The temple is best combined with a quick trek to the nearby Champhai‑to‑Aizawl scenic drive; two hours there and a coffee at the rooftop café at Laitlum Tourist Resort will round off the day without overstretching your itinerary.
