Curator's note

Siliserh Lake, eight miles south‑west of Alwar, is the kind of off‑beat detour that rewards a half‑day of lazy wandering and a good bottle of chilled nimbu‑paani. The reservoir, an 1800s engineering gimmick by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, spreads over seven square kilometres of placid water hemmed by pine‑scented woodland and a string of melancholy cenotaphs you’ll spot from the cracked‑tile promenade. Arrive early, before the weekend crowds from Jaipur thicken the tea stalls on the embankment, and hire a rickety pedal‑boat from the small jetty near the Maheshwari palace ruins; the water is still enough to hear the distant call to prayer from Alwar Fort. Bring a picnic of aloo‑puri and a thermos of chai, because the on‑site dhaba serves only the usual hot‑oil pakoras that taste like reheated disappointment. Sunset is the only time to linger: the sun turns the lake’s surface into molten gold and the cenotaphs cast thin silhouettes that look almost purposeful. Skip the “boating with a guide” tours – they waste money and time – and instead explore the path that loops the lake on foot, stopping at the oddly romantic, half‑collapsed marble pavilion at the southern tip. The best period is October to March; monsoon turns the surrounding forest into a soggy mess and the summer heat makes the water feel like lava. Stay the night in Alwar’s modest heritage hotel, The Grand Palace, and you’ll leave with a quiet lake‑side memory instead of the usual dusty forts.
