Curator's note

Siju Dobakkol, the “Bat Cave” perched on the slopes above Napak Lake, is the only reason most travellers even bother with the Garo Hills, and even then it should be a one‑day side‑trip rather than a headline attraction. Arrive from Tura at first light, hire a local guide in Mahendraganj and brace for a 30‑minute, uneven trek through tea‑covered ridges; the road is a pothole‑laden nightmare after the monsoon, so November to February is the only sensible window. Inside, the limestone chambers are a dimly lit tableau of stalactites that look like frozen icicles and stalagmites that have been growing since the British surveyed the region – the hike‑in is worth it, but the crowd of tourists snapping selfies at the “Great Hall” of bats is a thinly‑veiled wildlife disruption, and the echoing squeaks at dusk feel more like a gimmick than a pilgrimage. The cave is a research hub for biospeleology; a few quiet corners near the “Bat Roost” allow a glimpse of the massive colonies without the crowds, but you must keep noise to a whisper – the bats are sensitive and the local authorities will not tolerate disturbance. Skip the souvenir stalls at the entrance; the real payoff is the cool, mineral‑tanged air and the chance to feel, for a brief moment, that you are somewhere the rest of India cannot reach. Pack sturdy shoes, a headlamp with spare batteries and a warm jacket – the interior stays at 12 °C year‑round – and head back before the afternoon drizzle that rolls down from the Sahyadri‑type clouds that linger over the hills.
