Curator's note

Shantiniketan, the leafy campus that grew out of Debendranath Tagore’s modest ashram and was inflated into Rabindranath’s Visva‑Bharati, feels less like a tourist‑zone than a perpetual college break, so bring stamina and a notebook. Arrive early in October when the monsoon has retreated and the Poush Mela stalls in December still buzz with folk music, handcrafted khadi and the occasional stray goat — that’s the only time the open‑air art galleries on Rabindra Bhavan Road actually look lived‑in rather than deserted. Stay at the Heritage Guesthouse on Satyavrata Lane; the rooms are simple but the view of the Brahmaputra‑fed river across the green‑spattered courtyard is decent compensation for the lack of Wi‑Fi. Non‑negotiables: a sunrise walk through the open‑air classrooms of Kala Bhavana, a tea break at Kankabati’s cafeteria while watching students sketch at the Satyendra Prasad Boro museum, and a late‑afternoon linger at the Poush Mela’s main pavilion for a rickshaw‑driven folk performance. Skip the over‑photographed Shanti Dwar at the entrance unless you need a postcard, and avoid the October‑May heat wave if you plan to sit on the lawn of the Rabindra Sarovar for longer than ten minutes. Two days gets you the university’s main courtyards and a side‑trip to Amartya Sen’s modest home on the outskirts; four lets you wander the lesser‑known Sramajibi Bay, the ruined silk mill at Santiniketan Railway Station, and attend a night‑time bhajan at the nearby Amartya Sen Centre.
