Curator's note

Satkosia Tiger Reserve is the wilderness you reach only after surrendering to dust‑laden highways and the indifferent heat of central Odisha, so pack light, bring a sturdy pair of trekking shoes and an extra bottle of water – the nearest tea stall is a half‑day walk away. The sanctuary, declared in 1976 and upgraded to a tiger reserve in 2007, sprawls across 964 km² of river‑cut gorges, teak‑rich forest and the sinuous Mahanadi, making day‑tripping futile; a minimum of three nights lets you chase the elusive cats on a dawn safari from the Banjara or Kaimur bases, then unwind on a sunset boat ride at the Saptasajya lake, where you can actually see the river’s emerald water against limestone cliffs. Stay at the forest‑run eco‑lodges in Talabidadi or the modest government guesthouse in Bijepur – both place you within a kilometre of the main jeep tracks but spare you the nightly chorus of mosquitoes that will test any insect repellent. Skip the over‑promoted “tiger‑spotting” walks that start at 10 am; the heat drives the big cats into the shade until dusk, and you’ll be left watching a herd of barking deer instead. The best window is October to March, when the monsoon has cleared the underbrush and the temperature dips below thirty degrees; avoid June to September, when the forest turns into a soggy, leech‑infested maze. If you’re after photography, aim for the early morning light at the Satkosia gorge – the mist rising off the river creates a dramatic backdrop that no guidebook can capture.
