Curator's note

Saptamukhi River is the most unremarkable excuse to swing by the southern fringe of the Sundarbans, but if you edge out of Kolkata at sunrise and catch the first boat from Kakdwip, the tidal estuary will surprise you with its quiet, brackish sweep of mangrove‑lined water that feels more like a swamp than a river. The river’s name – literally “seven mouths” – is a nod to the labyrinth of channels that braid the delta; the most photogenic stretch is between Hara‑Laband and the tiny hamlet of Bakkhali, where the water turns a muted turquoise at high tide and the mangroves cling like green‑clad cliffs. Aim for November to February when the monsoon has receded, the humidity is tolerable and the dolphins that occasionally surface are not scared off by rain‑driven crowds. Stay the night in a modest ecolodge at Sagar Island; it offers basic rooms, a communal kitchen where you can wrestle with fresh hilsa and paturi, and a chance to hear local fishermen swear about the river’s fickle salinity. Skip the “boat‑safari” tours that promise “tiger sightings” – the tigers are deep in the forest, not cruising the channel – and instead opt for a low‑key paddle‑board at low tide to glimpse mud‑skippers and the occasional kingfisher. Bring insect repellent, waterproof shoes and a dry bag; the estuary’s mud will chew through anything softer, and the occasional sudden surge can raise the water level by a metre. Two days is honest: one for the river’s slow‑motion glide and a sunrise at the ancient Shakti‑Peeth temple on the banks, another for a brief foray into the nearby Sundarbanish forest trail before you retreat to the train back to Kolkata. Avoid the monsoon months of June to September – the river swells into a frothing, mosquito‑laden torrent that makes even the tiniest wooden skiff feel unsafe.
