Curator's note

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is a cramped mangrove maze on the western tip of Chorão Island, reachable only by a sputtering ferry from Old Goa or the jostling jetty at Panjim, so factor a half‑hour schedule just to cross the Mandovi. Arrive before sunrise, preferably at 05:30, when the estuary exhales a thin mist and the mud‑flat raptors – Indian pond herons, glossy ibises and the occasional white‑breasted kingfisher – stir; by mid‑morning the heat swells and the mangroves close in with swarms of mosquitoes that would make a malaria clinic blush. The sanctuary itself is tiny – a kilometre of boardwalks threading through brackish water and tangled roots – and the signage is almost nonexistent, so a knowledgeable local guide (often a retired fisherman who knows each nesting tree) is worth the extra rupee. Skip the generic “bird‑watching boat” that rattles past on a noisy motor; instead hire a rowboat for a silent glide and keep a pair of binoculars and a waterproof notebook handy. The best viewing spots are near the old Portuguese chapel ruin and the crumbling stone bridge where the river narrows. Visit in the cooler months of November to February; the monsoon (June‑September) floods the pathways and the sanctuary closes for safety. Stay in Panjim’s Latin Quarter for easy ferry access, but be prepared for basic amenities – the island has no restaurants, only a handful of roadside stalls selling masala chai and fried fish. Two hours is generous; an hour and a half will give you the essential glimpse of Salim Ali’s eponymous haven without the unnecessary trek.
