Curator's note

The Red Fort, with its imposing red‑sandstone walls and marble‑clad Diwan‑i‑Khas, is the non‑negotiable cornerstone of any Delhi itinerary, but treat it as a sprint, not a stroll; the early morning light at 07:30‑08:00 gives the façade a crisp glow and crowds are still thin enough to hear the distant call to prayer. Skip the ticket‑pricey audio guide and hire a knowledgeable local guide on Chandni Chowk who will point out the secret stairwell to the Rang Mahal and the Persian garden layout that most tourists miss. The Lahore‑Gate entrance is an informative spot, but beware the security tarpaulin that often blocks the view of the Alamgiri Gate; squeeze through the side gate at the western wall for a clearer shot of the massive cannons. Don’t waste time lingering in the museum on the second floor – the artefacts are poorly labelled and better seen elsewhere – instead head straight for the Sheesh‑Mahal’s mirrored ceiling before the mid‑day heat turns the interior into a sauna. Exit through the Mehtab Bagh garden at sunset for a decent view of the fort silhouetted against the sky, then slip into the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk for a chai‑spiced paratha. Two hours is an honest allotment; allocate a third if you’re keen on the light‑show on Mondays, but otherwise move on.
