Curator's note

The Rann of Kutch Falls is a mis‑named splash in an otherwise stark salt desert, and the only reason to swing by is the 80‑metre plunge into a surprisingly clear pool that fills by 11 am if you time the monsoon‑driven flash correctly. Arrive in Bhuj the night before, stay at the modest but clean Hotel Laxmi on Taywada Road – it’s close enough to the highway and cheap enough not to guilt‑trip you when you splurge on a bamboo‑raft lunch at the roadside dhaba, where the khichdi with fried papad is the only thing that doesn’t taste like dust. Park on the makeshift gravel at the base of the concrete viewing deck; the best photo is taken from the low rail at 12:15 pm when the sun kisses the water’s edge and the surrounding white salt flats flash like a mirror. Skip the “guided camel‑tour” from the village kiosk – it’s a half‑hour ride for a view you’ll already have from the deck, and the camels are over‑laden with tourists and tired locals. The falls dry out by mid‑afternoon, so plan a quick dip, change at the adjacent changing shed, then head back to Bhuj for a late dinner of Gujarati dhokla and chaas; you’ll be too sore to explore the Rann’s night‑time wildlife safari, which is overrated and heavily ticketed. The window is October to February; any later and the water is a mud‑bound trickle, any earlier and you’ll be chasing dust storms.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
