Curator's note

Ramgarh Vishdhari, barely a blip on the Rajasthan radar, finally earned its tiger‑reserve badge in 2022 and is the only place in Bundi where you can argue with a leopard over a waterhole at noon. The sanctuary’s 252 sq km of dry deciduous forest and scrub sit on the Aravalli foothills, so the dry months from October to March are the only time the heat drops below 45°C and the herbivore herds – chital, nilgai and the occasional gaur – actually leave the shade to graze, making predator sightings possible. Base yourself in the heritage hotel at Bundi Fort or, if you prefer rougher edges, a government guesthouse in the nearby village of Ramgarh; both give you a twenty‑minute drive to the entry gate at Khuri, where you’ll sign a strict no‑fire, no‑litter waiver and hand over a one‑hour permit for the jeep safari that whisks you past the limestone cliffs of Chauthara and the ancient stepwell of Bhan Singh. Expect a bumpy ride, a guide who can name every bird (the black‑winged kite is a real treat) and a chance to see a tiger loafing on a sandbank if you’re lucky – but don’t waste your afternoon on the poorly maintained nature‑trail that loops around the old hunting lodge; it’s more mosquito buffet than wildlife experience. Skip the monsoon (July–September) when the roads turn to mud and the park closes, and ditch the “photo‑op” tiger‑watching tours that promise guaranteed sightings – they’re a myth that only frustrates the real wildlife. Two days is honest for a glimpse of the apex predator and the quiet charm of a sanctuary that, unlike Ranthambore, still feels untamed.
