Curator's note

Rambagh Palace, that ostentatious Taj‑run relic five kilometres north of Jaipur’s Red City, is the only place where you can drink a mango‑lassi in a room whose ceiling once sheltered a Maharaja’s hunting parties. Arrive early on a winter morning—November to February is the only tolerable window—and park on Bhawani Singh Road, then walk the manicured garden where peacocks still strut beside marble fountains; the scent of jasmine masks the faint smell of diesel from the nearby highway. The check‑in ritual is a performance in itself, with a concierge in silk‑embroidered rosette ushering you past the Indo‑Saracenic façade into a lobby that still smells of sandalwood and polished brass. The most honest recommendation is to skip the mandatory “royal dinner” at Rajput Room unless you relish over‑cooked paneer tikka at a price that rivals a small flat. Instead, book the afternoon tea at the Courtyard, where you’ll taste Rose‑petal chai alongside a freshly baked baklava that actually lives up to the hype. Nights are best spent on the balcony of Suite 101, watching the city’s pink sulphur‑lit forts flicker; the noise of traffic is a small price for the view. One night is a novelty, two lets you savour the spa’s Ayurvedic massage without feeling rushed, and three is the only way to justify the price tag. Avoid the monsoon months; the gardens turn soggy and the historic courtyards lose their charm. If you’re only after a quick glimpse of royal opulence, the nearby City Palace is a better, cheaper alternative.
