Rabindra Museum

The Rabindra Museum is a museum located in Mungpoo, near Kalimpong, in the state of West Bengal, India. Poet Rabindranath Tagore stayed in this house in 1938 and 1939, at the invitation of poet and novelist Maitreyi Devi, the wife of quinologist dr. M.M.Sen.

Curator's note

The Rabindra Museum, a modest two‑storey colonial bungalow tucked into the pine‑scented tea estates of Mungpoo, is worth a brief stop only if you’re already in the Kalimpong region and have a soft spot for literary nostalgia; Tagore’s two‑year sojourn in 1938‑39, at the invitation of Maitreyi Devi – herself a poet and the wife of quinologist Dr M.M. Sen – is the sole justification for the modest collection of handwritten notes, a creased photograph of the poet on a verandah, and a few rusted brass tea‑pots that once served his guests. The house sits on the road between Sangachok and Ghoom, a kilometre or two off the main Kalimpong‑Mungpoo axis, so plan a half‑day excursion from a Kalimpong base such as the 1900‑era Hotel Seven Hills or a budget homestay in the village of Rango. Arrive mid‑morning when the mist lifts enough to see the distant Himalaya and the tea‑garden vista, and linger just long enough for the marble plaque that explains the connection – the rest of the museum feels like a glorified guestroom. The monsoon (July–September) floods the access road and turns the tea fields into a soggy blur, while October to early December offers crisp air, clear views and a chance to pair the visit with a trek to nearby Tinchuley for a proper tea‑break. Skip the souvenir shop on the front lawn; it hawks mass‑produced postcards that add nothing to the experience. If poetry is not your compass, allocate the time elsewhere – the nearby Kalimpong Buddhist monastery or the vibrant bazaar of Sangachok deliver far more sensory payoff for the same travel effort.
