Curator's note

Qasimabad Fort, officially Nawab Muhammad Qasim Fort, is a one‑day curiosity rather than a destination, sitting inconspicuously on the north bank of the Ganges in the modest town of Kasimabad, Ghazipur district. Erected in 1742 by Nawab Sheikh Abdullah, the red‑brick rampart and crumbling gateway offer a glimpse of late‑Mughal provincial ambition, but the site is overrun by stray cattle, noisy diesel‑engine generators and a market that smells of fried pakoras more than history. The only reliable way to see the interior is to arrive at sunrise, when the low light softens the weather‑worn frescoes and the morning crowd of locals buying “kachori‑samosa” from the stall opposite the main gate thins out. Skip the advertised “guided tour” – the guide is usually a relative who recites unsourced anecdotes for a ten‑rupee fee. Instead, walk the four‑meter‑high wall, peer down at the adjoining Mughal‑style moat, and linger at the lone marble plaque that records the fort’s founding – it’s the only thing that feels authentic. The nearest decent lodging is the modest Darshan Guesthouse on Station Road; it’s far enough to avoid the night‑time crows that roost on the ramparts and close enough for a quick auto‑rickshaw back after a sunset watch of the Ganges. Visit between October and March to dodge the searing summer heat; otherwise the brick interiors become an oven, and the only thing you’ll remember is the sweltering air.
