Pune Ghats 3

Stone steps to the river; lamps lit at sunset.

Curator's note

Pune’s Ghats 3, the stone stairway sloping down to the Mula‑Mutha at Sadashiv Peth, is a modestly photogenic slice of the city that most tourists never notice. Arrive just after the 6.30 pm heat has lapsed; the river’s mist softens the oppressive humidity and the lamplighters, who fire up the copper lanterns at 6.45, give the descent a warm amber glow that is worth the treck up from nearby Deccan College. The best spot to watch the sunset is the low‑lying platform opposite the old Pune Municipal Office – bring a bottle of chilled tangy kokum sherbet and a pair of binoculars, the river traffic of trawlers and the occasional early‑morning barge is surprisingly lively. Avoid the weekend rush: locals treat the steps as an impromptu yoga class and the area becomes a noisy free‑for‑all. Skip the advertised “guided heritage walk” that begins at the foot; the guide’s patter is generic and the route barely deviates from the main path. If you need a restroom, head to the sprawling Mhatre Hospital complex a few blocks east – it’s the only clean facility for a kilometre radius. Two hours here, preferably in November or early January when the monsoon has drained the river but the evenings remain crisp, is all you need before you retreat to a boutique stay in Koregaon Park.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
