Pune Fort 2

A hilltop fort, ramparts wide enough for elephants.

Curator's note

Pune Fort 2, perched on the wind‑swept ridge above Katraj, is the kind of hill‑top relic that feels impressive only when you remember it once housed war elephants, the ramparts actually wide enough for a dozen to file past in formation. The climb from the base road (take the Katraj–Sangvi footpath, not the tourist‑packaged jeep tour) takes about thirty minutes of steady ascent; the early morning mist lifts just after sunrise, turning the stone walls a paler, more photogenic grey, so aim to be on the top by 7 am to avoid the midday heat and the throngs of school groups. The interior is largely overgrown, but the lone cannon at the south bastion, the crumbling tea‑house where a 19th‑century British officer once scribbled his diary, and the wide‑spaced parapet that still shows the faint imprint of elephant footfalls are worthwhile. Skip the souvenir stalls that pop up near the gate at 11 am—they sell cheap plastic tridents and a “heritage” tea that tastes like boiled water. A modest dhaba at the foot of the hill (Katraj Bazar, three‑spice vada pav, strong filter coffee) is the best place to rest before the descent. The monsoon months (June–September) render the paths slick and the views shrouded, so visit between November and February; a half‑day is honest, a full day feels indulgent.
